DAVID SEAMON, Ph.D. Professor of Architecture at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, USA. Trained in environment-behavior research, is interested in a phenomenological approach to place, architecture, environmental experience, and environmental design as place making. Widely published and known for his many books - including, 53 Research Papers in Social Architecture: 1963-2005; Programming and Participation in Architectural Design; Three Decades of Design and Community; Community Participation in Design and Planning, Creating Environments for Young Children, School Design, Integrating Programming Evaluation and Participation in Design, and Visual Research Methods in Design. Is the USA editor of the Journal of Design Studies, and the founder of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). Has research concentrated in the areas of social housing, children's environments, community arts, aging populations and community participation. Has been a visiting lecturer at more than 85 institutions in the USA and abroad. KORAY ÖZCAN, B.CP., M.S., Ph.D. Assistant Professor currently teaching at the Department of City and Regional Planning, Selçuk University, Konya. Received his Bachelor in City and Regional Planning at YTU in 1995, MS in Landscape Architecture at Ankara University in 2000, and his doctorate at the Selçuk University in 2005, with his Ph.D. thesis titled Urban Network and Urban Models in Anatolia during Seljuk Period. Fields of interest are urban history and urban landscape in Turkish culture from Central Asia and Iran to Anatolia.

NEBEEL HAMDI, B.Arch., M.Arch., Ph.D. Professor of Housing and Urban Development at Oxford Brookes University. Qualified as an architect at the Architectural Association in London (1968); worked for the GLC (1969-1978), where his award-winning housing projects established his reputation in participatory design and planning; was Associate Professor of Housing at the MIT (1981-1990). Consulted on participatory action planning and upgrading of slums in cities to all major international development agencies, and to charities and NGOs worldwide. Is the author of Small Change (2004), Housing Without Houses (1995), and co-author of Making Micro Plans (1988) and Action Planning for Cities (1997), and editor of the collected volumes Educating for Real (1996) and Urban Futures (2005).

NESLİHAN ASUTAY-EFFENBERGER, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Habil. Studied Art History at the İstanbul University, received her doctorate from the University of Bonn. Currently works at the Free University of Berlin, where she received her venia legendi for Byzantine Art and Archaeology with a Habilitationsschrift, entitled “Die Landmauer von Konstantinopel. Untersuchungen zu Topographie, Architektur, Mauerwerk und Baumaterial“. Her research interests include Byzantine Architecture, culture transfer between Byzantium and its Islamic neighbours and the historical topography of Constantinople/İstanbul.

OLGU ÇALIÅžKAN, BS.CRP., M.S.CP. Research assistant at METU Faculty of Architecture. Received his Bachelor in City and Regional Planning (2001) and M.CP in Urban Design (2004) at METU. OYA ATALAY FRANCK, B.Arch., M.Arch., Ph.D. (Dr. sc. techn.) Architect and architectural historian. Has received her Bachelor’s in Architecture at METU and her Master’s at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich with her research on Ernst Egli. Her main areas of research are concepts of space in modern art and architecture, the interrelations of politics and architecture, and early modernism in Europe and in the Near East. Publishes regularly for architectural periodicals on contemporary issues in architecture and education. Currently in charge of international relations and research coordination at the Department of Architecture ETH Zurich.
